The Gingerbread City 2018 Masterplan – Imagining Cities of the Future
What does the ideal city of the future look like? The Museum of Architecture’s Gingerbread City proposes that our forward-thinking cities of the future will be inclusive and easy to navigate, while also being sustainable and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. To ensure that these policies are translated into practice, the city is shaped by three guiding principles.

The first considers high-density living – the use of multi-storey buildings – that bring together a variety of people and uses under one roof. The second principle ensures that the city is well-connected by incorporating a contemporary ‘high-line’ that allows for light rail, cyclists and pedestrians to travel in a safe and stimulating environment. The third principle focuses on green spaces, which are essential for a healthy lifestyle in cities. Urban farms, green roofs, terraced gardens and parks can be seen throughout the city, encouraging its residents to come out and play.

Sussex Pond Pudding Villas

Our proposal creates a lively space for the community and presents a deconstructed rendition of historic architecture whilst preserving the heritage of Castle Hill.

Creating a fusion between the past and present, Sussex Pond Pudding Villas proposes elevated canals as a means of future transport; linking together a variety of medieval houses and presenting a modern twist on traditional shared living.

"Chinese recipes for the ginger root were developed during the 10th century to have medicinal and magical uses. Then the ginger root spread to Europe via the Silk Road."

Looking for a way to keep up the festivities in a healthy way?
Try this kiwi and pomegranate seed Christmas tree! Just stack the kiwi's like bricks, putting one along the edges of two others. Use a cookie cutter to make a star shape from a slice of apple to go on top.

Behind the Scenes

Today we look at some examples of curved Gingerbread!

The making of the opera house...

The Inside-Out Opera House is a large landmark building on the waterfront, attracting Gingerbread City dwellers to witness gingetastic performances. It has walkways wrapping around the building, connecting to the surrounding plots and parks and creating a lively civic presence around the Opera House.

The building is constructed from modular gingerbread components. The forms of the Reverba-Biscuits are designed to enhance the acoustic performance of the opera house.
This expresses the technical brilliance of the opera house externally.

The Making of the Library...

The Liquorice Library, nestled high on Castle Hill, makes for a prominent backdrop in the Research and University District. The location is highly accessible, due to its proximity to the terminus of both the Funicular de Pancake and the Sugar Loaf Mountain Cable Car.

The design presents a contemporary version of the grand libraries of old; a cathedral of knowledge providing a place of interaction between the rising batch of graduates and the wider community of Gingerbread City. An open public space at ground floor encourages this social interaction and draws people into the liquorice heart of the Library.

Confection Connection
Nick Baker Architects & TZG Partnership
2018

Picture
In an ever greater connected world fast and efficient access to all modes of transport is key. The Confection Connection facilitates chocolatey smooth and easy access from Praline Plaza to the High Line. Inspired by liquorice like flexibility and speed, the transport hubbabubba identifies with land and air transport. The raised building supports maximum access and visibility for the gingerbread people and connects them with the new future of travel – scone drones! Like bees to a hive the myriad of flying saucers arrive and depart from this enclosed runway shaped building. Construction materials are kneaded to their full potential to create a curved shell formed fabric, wrapping it in colour and identity.

Vic the Victorian Warehouse was stripped bare with no floors and roof in order to escape biscuit rates. To boost emotional health in the Gingerbread City, new planning policies encourage
bold civic visions through the fusion of art and architecture to inspire motivation and raise optimism. In support of this vision, Vic’s new make-over is a sugar-sculptured infinite landscape full of creative curiosities.
Vic is now a flexible theatre for watching outdoor films, hosting food markets, gigs and festivals. A homage to Golden-Syrup Matta-Clark: an exploration of decay and revitalisation.
