Shelter from the Storm, Holland Harvey, 2018

Picture
Around 7,500 people sleep rough on the streets of London each year. A shortage of affordable housing, cuts to benefit funding and increased migration means that this figure has seen a sharp rise in recent years.
This building integrates an attractive, contemporary purpose-built shelter for the homeless into a larger mixed-use development - providing beds, warm food and support for those most in need.
The programme is supplemented by a community café, local shop and affordable workspace to create an “active frontage”, and underpin the services offered by the shelter.
A hopeful vision for the future city.

Some of the early recipes for Gingerbread were Ginger-less!

"Interestingly enough, early English 'Gingerbread' recipes, did not call for ginger, and were rather more like a bread or a honey cake."

Kugelhopf House focusses on the needs of Gingerbread City’s most vulnerable residents. As Dick Wittington found out - the streets aren’t paved with gold. Instead, for some a hidden uphill struggle is faced to get back on their feet.

Kugelhopf House makes use of the prime dockland site to create a circular economy whereby income from those fortunate enough to be housed can go towards funding the care of those working their way up. You can even try it yourself by putting coins into the housing and watching it make its way to those in need.

Hildrey Studio won the Museum of Architecture's first Grant Award. The studio is an award-winning creative practice that uses architectural skills to create a more socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable built environment. The studio was shortlisted for Beazley Designs of the Year as well as the Innovation in Politics Award for its ProxyAddress project.
