Sneak Peak into the Nature's Architect!

Let's learn about Bee as one of the Nature's Architects.

Picture
Bees are very precise builders and have an incredible sense of geometry. The bee nest (as it’s called in its natural state) stores honey, pollen and eggs. Bees use the hexagonal shape as it’s the most efficient way to use the least amount of wax and the best use of space.

The exterior wall of a building is called its façade. One of the most popular patterns on a facade is the repeated hexagonal shape that has been inspired by bees.

Activity

One of the amazing lessons learned from bees is the fascination of creating the same shape over and over to create a pattern. For this activity, collect a group of one object such as milk bottle caps, yogurt pots, buttons or more. By placing them an equal distance apart, you create a repeating pattern. Can you find other repeating patterns in nature or the built environment?

Gingerbread Air
by Foster + Partners

This year the team are creating a sustainably powered air-based urban mobility solution for Father Christmas to deliver presents across the Gingerbread City. The site will feature a designated take-off and landing area, as well as a number of electric vehicle charging stations to offer a sustainable vision for this year’s city. A railway train will deliver old toys to the recycling centre which will then be upcycled to create new toys for Father Christmas to give out. A Christmas market, elf town and Christmas tree will also be incorporated.
